Nuwara Eliya

Third in a series on the teas of Sri Lanka.

Higher up the slopes of Mt. Pedro from Dimbulla are the gardens of Nuwara Eliya, some of the highest altitudes in Sri Lanka (and the tea-growing world).  These are said to produce “the champagne of Ceylon teas.”  More consistent year-round, Nuwara Eliya tea from elevations of six to seven thousand feet is indisputably among the world’s greatest black teas.  It yields light-bodied, lightly astringent pale liquor with a haunting sweetness underlying its woodsy flavor.  It is pungent but delicately perfumed.  For some reason it is seldom sold by estate name, although Nuwara Eliya Estate, Pedro and Lover’s Leap are not unknown.
